It is always very interesting when one comes across of a few new names of young and upcoming artists who are eager to share and show their talents in local exhibitions. New talent is one of the vital signs of an active and vibrant art scene. Manuel Caruana is such a new name whose contribution to this exhibition is a series of recent abstract watercolours. ( Exhibition held during 2010 at the "Gallery Last Touch" , in Mosta).

I made my acquaintance with Manuel some six years ago at the regular life drawing sessions held at Alfred Briffa's studio in Mosta. We drew and shared ideas and soon became friend and have been in touch ever since. I was perhaps one of the very first to experience his abstract watercolour results when with the naive sincerity of a child Manuel emailed me several images for my evaluation and comments.

Manuel has experienced very early in his career a sense of dissatisfaction with recording objective reality and contemplated the possibility of venturing into more spontaneous compositions which are not preconceived and allowed himself to go with the flow of painting itself. The only tangible concept he shared with me which makes some reference to nature was the fact that he is fascinated by the changes of space formed by the clouds and particularly the array of colours he observes while returning home from work.

This collection of watercolour abstracts is indeed about colours and shapes but in my opinion they are more concerned with the control and flow of the watercolour medium. I notice how subtle colour stains the paper surface, seeps into its weave and gently blends into the adjacent colour. At times colour is confined to a definitive irregularly shaped area which while relating to what is next to it, at the same time offers a sharp contrast.

The viewer is invited to interact in the experience of these new creations by Manuel Caruana to experience the sense of play and novelty that the young artist encounters in his creations.

Peter Quinn RWS

Peter Quinn was born in Dumfries, Scotland in 1960. He attended Glasqow School of Art from 1982-1987 and graduated with 1st class honours from the Drawing and Painting department in 1986. During 1987 he spent a year studying Art History as a postgraduates in Glasqow. From 1987-1990 he had a studio in Glasgow and participated in many exhibitions both in Scotland and London. From 1990 he settled down in the North East of England; he continued his studies and obtained a Ph.D in History of Art from the University of Sunderland of Scotland.

He is married to Josiette Debono from Birzebbugia.

He was elected an Associate Member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 2007 and a Fellow this year (2011)

Borne Expressions – Victor Agius

Opus64 Galerie is currently featuring a solo exhibition by Victor Agius. This exhibition is entitled ‘Borne Expressions’ – a title that encapsulates all the different works on show including abstracted landscapes, abstract paintings and ceramic sculptures. The works on show are a collection of Agius’ latest artistic expressions through diverse media. Art critic Ms Charlene Vella MA refers to the paintings displayed as ‘vigorous and temperamental, with dashes of colour enlivening the sky and ground, and bleeding paint dripping steadily down to the fringes of the canvas.’ The sculptures are the artist’s fresh experiments in which his distinguishing trait of intertwined figures embodying relationships of unknown forms is still evident.

Victor Agius has studied art under Maltese Artist Harry Alden, at the University of Malta and at the International School of Drawing, Painting and Sculpture in Perugia, Italy. On an international scale, he has also participated in the Ceramic Triennale of the Domenican Republic and has exhibited his works in shows held at the Bricklane Gallery in London, at the Florence Biennale, in Paris and in Milan. His art forms part of private collections worldwide.

Borne Expressions will be open for public viewing from the 11^th June till 2^nd July 2011 at the Opus64 Galerie, Tigne Street, Sliema. CATALOGUE

Victor Agius’ landscapes are executed with a perceptive eye and congenial colour tones. They can be described as minimalist in the choice of what is chosen to be depicted - the essential church domes and bell towers, and a few other building - such as in Attard. But these few elements are engulfed in the atmosphere of spirited surroundings, and it is only in the choice of which buildings are depicted that Agius is minimalist. His compositions can definitely not be described as such.

They are vigorous and temperamental, with dashes of colour enlivening the sky and ground, and bleeding paint dripping steadily down to the fringes of the canvas. His landscapes can be atmospheric, with sfumato taking over not only vegetation, but even roads and buildings.

Abstracts also feature. They have different media at play, as well as textures to further enliven the canvas.

Expression is bountiful, and the exhibition title is the product of a romantic painter who is also sensitive to his surroundings.

Biography

Victor Agius, b. 1982, had his first contact with art in his father’s sculpture studio. He has studied under Harry Alden and got a degree in art from the University of Malta where amongst others he was tutored by Dr Raphael Vella, Dr Joseph P Cassar and Caesar Attard . He furthered his studies at the MCAST and in Perugia, Italy. Victor works in both painting and sculpture. As early as 2003 he was awarded 1^st Prize by Antonelli Institute of Art and Photography-USA and again in 2008 ‘Il Gilglio di Firenze’- Awarded by Dottor Niccolo Ricci for his artistic achievements. His personal exhibitions in Malta have recently been held at the Ministry for Gozo in Victoria and at the Auberge d’Italie in Valletta. Amongst his international solo exhibitions, Agius exhibited his works in Florence and Lago Maggiore, Italy. His art forms part of private collections worldwide. His work is also found at the Museum of Modern Art in Santo Domingo. Lately he participated in a number of international collective shows including one at ‘Centre Culturel Christiane Peugeot in Paris, ‘Art in Mind’ show at the Bricklane Gallery in London, the Biennale of Contemporary Art in Florence and at the Long Room Gallery, New College, Oxford University in Britain.

Michelle was educated at Chiswick House School, St Martin's College and St Aloysius College which is were she obtained her foundation years in art subjects. She attended various art classes and workshops, including an 18 month spell at the Government School of Arts in Valletta. She also participated in collective art exhibitions around Malta. Her works feature mainly oils, pastel and pencil as well as charcoal and pen and ink. Michelle posseses a BA Hons in History of Art from the Malta University and is presently reading for ther Masters Degree in the same subject. She is presently curator of the Carmelite Priory Museum in Mdina.

PHILIP AGIUS (b.1964)

PHILIP AGIUS was born in 1964 and hails from Zebbug Malta.

He studied painting technique under Alfred Chircop and Anthony Calleja. His works have been delivered to illustrious industry clients like Philip Morris, Golden Tulip, and Novartis, amongst others. He has also carried out picture illustrations for several Maltese books. Agius has been teacher of Art at St. Michael school for fifteen years, besides providing private tuition.

Artistic discipline and conformity, somewhat sacrificed by Agius in his work for the sake of the genuine self, manifest themselves clearly in his teaching philosophy towards art students with regard to basic technique. But even here, his approach is adaptive as per the specific attributes of each individual student. Agius states adamantly that he “does not teach art to others, but merely assists to bring out the artistry in them”.

Typically, Agius works in concentrated bursts of energy, while the underlying emotions are still running high and true. Once completed, a painting is promptly forgotten, and his mind drifts on to new emotions and motivations.

His other artistic interests are wide-ranging and include sculpture, by both moulding and carving, manually and mechanically, and a great nature lover.

JOANNE FENECH PORTELLI (b.1976)

Joanne Fenech Portelli, born 1976, hails from Qrendi and lives in Luqa in Malta. She studied painting and drawing techniques under artists Dr. Joseph Paul Cassar, Charles Cassar, Anton Calleja, Alfred Briffa and Philip Agius, and also sculpture in clay techniques with artist Angelo Agius.  Joanne has been teaching primary school children since 1998, and in 2001 was appointed as an Art Primary School teacher. She loves teaching Art to children and is paid back by the satisfaction and feeling of well-being that her pupils are enjoying painting and drawing.

          Since 2003 Joanne has been actively exhibiting in various local art exhibitions, and has also set up two solo exhibitions in 2006. She also had a duo exhibition with artist Audrey Mercieca in 2008 entitled ‘Of Faces & Figures’, where the artwork exhibited was that of human figures but also included portraits done from life and bronze sculptures. In 2007 she was curator for the Primary Art Teachers exhibition entitled ‘Fusion’, where primary school children also had the chance to follow workshops.

             In 2006, Joanne was one of the founding members to set up the Pastel Society of Malta and was appointed Treasurer. She takes part in setting up an art exhibition by the society members annually. She is also a member of The Pastel Guild of Europe and of the Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce of Malta. Joanne’s artwork reflects her visions and emotions depicted in various media according to the subject. In 2008, the editor of the art magazine ‘Artists & Illustrators’ noticed Joanne’s artwork on her website and published one of Joanne’s paintings in the May 2008 edition.

            For Joanne, art is her passion and work. An art teacher, mother and artist, Joanne Fenech Portelli expresses her feelings and emotions through her art, be it paintings or ceramic sculptures. Her imaginative art is decorative, her landscapes poetical and peaceful, her portraits and figures expressive. She reflects her visions and sentiments in her artwork which is depicted in various media according to the mood, subject or theme she is conveying to the viewer in this universal language of art.

CARMEL MICALLEF (b.1948) was born in Birkirkara - Malta. He was educated at St. Aloysius College. In 1976 he won first and third prizes in the Malta Amateur Art Competition and Exhibition. He followed a five year course at the Malta School of Art. He participated in many collective exhibitions in Malta. England, Germany, Greece, Italy, Australia and U.S.A. Moreover he also held ten personal exhibitions two of which at the Fine Art Museum, Valletta and one in Kaufering Germany.

Carmel won first prize in the Readers Exhibited Works Competition organized by The Artist Magazine of UK. His works can be found in private collections in Malta and abroad.

'Sue started working with clay in 1993 and feels it is a shot in the arm from the normality of everyday life, it’s also an infinitely diverse medium with which she can express herself. She feels that freedom is lost to routine and tries to avoid that predictability in my ceramic work. The concepts she plays with demand that she uses varying ceramic techniques to display the thoughts that collect in her head, her most content moments being the ones spent in the studio untangling her mind.

Sue is currently in her final year of study at Glasgow School of Art for her BA (Hons) Degree in Ceramic Design and although originally established as a potter, through the influence of her studies many other making methods have now become dominant in her work. She continues to research and develop the use of clay, glazes and firing techniques.'

Mario Agius (l956- ) has nourished a love for sculpture and design from his early youth. His humble, kind and gentle nature impinges itself on his concepts, vision and artistic expression. Talent and his enthusiasm for sculpture helped him in no small way during his studies under the late Monsignor Michelangelo Apap (1915-2006) in drawing and painting and in carving wood under the able direction of Anton Agius (1933-2008) one of our leading carvers in wood after the exceptional Samuel Bugeja (1920-2004), his relative. For several decades Mario Agius has been commissioned numerous works in churches especially and particularly in the sphere of decorative sculpture in wood and ecclesiastical furniture. In 1989 he attended a course in sculptural studies at the White Knight Gallery in Cheltenham, U.K. organized by Ian Norbury, a sculptor of intemational repute. Presently Mario Agius teaches technology and design in wood at Ninu Cremona Lyceum Complex in Victoria, Gozo. The artist has participated in various collective exhibitions including those organized by Members of the British Woodcan/ers Association. A number of his works have been acquired by art lovers and are found in private collections both locally and outside our shores that include countries like England and Switzerland. His finest works in carved wood adorn our churches in towns and villages. Mario Agius is an expert craftsman and professional artist who has exploited surface globigerina with a hard patina, creatively using vermiculated eroded surfaces for effect in contrast to silken polished parts

Doranne Alden

Doranne Alden is a professional graphic designer and artist. As an artist, her preferred painting medium is watercolour based media. Doranne was born in Sliema in 1963, and after completing her education, studied art for a number of years at the School of Art in Malta under the guidance of Joseph L. Mallia (1937- ). She also followed other Design related courses, including Interior Design, but chose to work as a Graphic Designer and Artist.

Contemporaneously she frequented a painting group led by Joy Micallef Farndell(1924-), an exceptional watercolourist. In Malta she worked as a graphic designer for over fifteen years with several major advertising agencies and eventually as a freelance designer. Over the years she gleaned experience in several aspects of design, but it was during the years as a freelance designer that Doranne produced a series of original postcards: ‘Details of Malta’, posters: ‘Glimpses of Malta’ and personalised photographic calendars. Inevitably this led her to launch her own advertising agency: ‘Details Design Ltd’, along with a partner up to 1995.

In 1996 she settled in Germany with her family until 2003. While living there she held drawing and watercolour classes for adults. She also became an active member of an art group of abstract art organised by German artist Frau Renate Botzenhardt. She lived in Bavaria, she participated in joint and collective exhibitions. Her three major exhibitions were two solos: the first at the Gasthaus Zur Post in Wessoburn, Germany, while the second solo was held at the Art Hotel in Vienna, Austria and: a joint exhibition held at the Town Hall in Tutzing, Bavaria.

In 2006 Doranne won first prize in the watercolour section in the Silver Palette Competition organised biannually by the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce. Her third solo was held in December 2008, at a VR-Bank near Passau and and most recent solo was in 2009 at the premises of German Maltese Circle in Valletta, Malta.
Her work has been referred to as ‘little jewels of art’ in the ‘Ammersee Kurier’; as ‘natural without being too realistic’ a phrase by Thomas Wellens in the ‘Weilheim Tablett’; Marika Azzopardi coined the epithet ‘warmth and mouth-watering mellowness’ for her fruit (pears) in the ‘Weekender’ the culture section of ‘The Times’ a local paper. Alden’s paintings form part of several private collections in Malta and overseas. One such work holds pride of place in the foyer of the Munich International School, Percha Bavaria.

Marthese Vella started tuition at the Malta Society of Arts, Manufactures and Commerce under the tutorship of Anthony Degiovanni and after at the Malta School of Art under Joseph Lawrence Mallia, Harry Alden, Charles Cassar, Joseph Casha, Ray Pitre` and Eman Grima. She also followed a programme of studies under the guidance of Artist Anthony Calleja.

Exhibited in various collective exhibitions such as the International Biennale in Poland, “Eight Women in Gozo” and “Eight Women in Historical Towns”. Was awarded an Honourable Mention in the Silver Palette Competition in 2002 and is included in “The International Dictionary of Artists who Painted Malta” by Nicholas de Piro.

Marthese loves shade, brightness and colour that instinctively inspire her to capture moments through her art. Her favourite mediums are Acrylics and Water Colours.

VINCE CARUANA -" 7 DAYS" PAINTING EXHIBITION IN GOZO

Born and raised in the Maltese Islands, small but yet rich in its 7000 years of intriguing history gave Vince Caruana an appreciation for an eclectic culture from an early age. His artistic works reflects a marriage of characteristics, styles and aesthetics of the islands’ identity – the megalithic temples, the narrow meandering streets of the towns, the Renaissance cathedrals, the Baroque churches – with a contemporary sensuality.

Caruana studied art at the Malta Schools of Art, Scranton College of Arts Pennsylvania and earned a Masters in Visual Arts from the Libera Accademia di Belle Arti of Florence. He has mounted several solo exhibitions and has participated in numerous collectives both locally and abroad. Some major international collectives include Madiera International Arte Bienal (Portugal), Museo Casa da Luz (Portugal), Tempra Accademy (Connecticut, USA), Akademie Klausenhof of Hamminken (Germany), Culturel Christiane Peugeot (Paris), Galerie Adam & Eve (Paris), Loggia del Grano and the Quarter both in Florence. He has been the artist-in-residence of some major 5 star resorts on the island including Mgarr Hotel, Grand Hotel and the Kempinski San Lawrenz Resort. Currently he is the artist in residence of Maji Wine & Dine.

His winning-paintings have earned him distinctive awards namely the Malta Biennal: Tribute to CHOGM, Malta, a Special Distinction Award: Connecticut, USA, the President’s Special Award: Madiera International Arte Bienal, Portugal and the Palma D’Oro Award: Italy. Additionally, Caruana has realized some distinctive artworks comprising the Grand Hotel conference hall 6’’ x 12’’ mural, the GCAC conference hall mural 4’’ x 6’’ mural, a set of paintings for the archives of St. Jospeh Band Club, a memento to the ex-President of Malta Dr. Edward Fenech Adami, and a memento to Alejandro Amenabar (Madrid), the director of several films.

Robert Galea B.A. (Hons.) (b. 1986) is a graduate in History of Art and an artist. He is currently reading for an MA in History of Art at the University of Malta. He has published papers about Medieval architectural elements such as the muxrabija-window and the roundel carvings and is currently extending this area of research. On the other hand, his MA research will focus on the nude in Maltese art between the years 1900 and 1950.

Robert has studied drawing privately under the tutorship of Anton Calleja and at the University of Malta as part of the Fine Arts section of the History of Art Department under the tutelage of Prof. Joseph Paul Cassar and Dr. Giuseppe Schembri. Robert has exhibited in both collective and solo exhibitions. His solo exhibitions include Bingemma (November 2008) and Xanthon: where the earth is coloured golden brown (June 2009).

Among his sacred art works are the St. Francis in Glory (2007), on display at the Oratory of the Conventual Franciscans in Rabat, Malta, St. George Preca (2008), at the Qawra Parish Convent and his St. Chiara of Montefalco (2010), on display at St. Mark’s church in Rabat, Malta.

JOE JULIAN FARRUGIA, writer / lyricist, from Malta introduced his works in public in the mid 90’s and has successfully taken a regular part in local song contests and was voted Best Lyricist on various occasions. Several of his songs were chosen as televison programmes’ signature tunes.

His lyrics stepped into the international fora and in 1999 his song Jekk Ghada ma Jisbahx was chosen by American Airlines to be played whenever a passenger requested to listen to music from

Malta

. The same song was also highlighted in Fred Bronson’s Pop Goes the World on worldwide Music Choice digital radio from the

U.S.

In international song contests, Joe Julian won no less than 9 festivals in Italy, Bulgaria and

Romania

. One of the mentioned contests earned him a Diploma from the University of Florence. In 2008, a song of his reached the Bulgarian final of the selection for the Eurovision Song Contest.

In 2005, his song Life is a Train was released by NBT Records (U.S.) in a compilation disc sold in three continents.

Joe Julian is a regular writer on Maltese newspapers and magazines. He was a regular contributor in a Sunday Maltese newspaper for 4 years writing articles about Maltese famous people of the past. He works also on television and produced various transmissions ranging from variety shows, magazine programmes and social productions. He also pens public relations articles for production houses and television stations. He used to write drama for television too with some 50 episodes in different teleserials and sitcoms. He is presently producing, directing and script-writing episodes for television programme Bijografiji.

Joe Julian is married to Marlene. they have two daughters; Clara and Valentina.

L-unuri li nghata Censu huma hafna u dawn jinkludu l-OBE minghand ir-Regina Elizabetta, Midalja tad-Deheb tas-Socjetà ta’ l-Arti, Manifattura u Kummerc, il-Phoenicia Trade Trophy, il-Premju Città di Valletta, Kavallier tar-Repubblika Taljana, Kavallier ta’ San Gwann u l-Ordni Nazzjonali ta’ Mertu mill-President ta’ Malta fl-1993.

L-ahhar bicca xoghol li ghamel kien Kristu mqajjem mill-mewt tal-Knisja tal-Frangiskani tal-Qawra fl-1999 meta kellu 90 sena.

Censu Apap miet nhar il-15 ta’ Frar 2003 fl-età ta’ 93 sena. Il-funeral sarlu fil-Knisja tan-Nazzarenu f’Tas-Sliema fejn hemm hafna statwi ta’ qaddisin u profeti li ghamel hu. New works by Gozitan artist Mark Sagona

Gozitan artist Mark Sagona is currently showing his latest collection of paintings at Le Meridien St Julians Hotel & Spa
(Exhibition Area, Level 1). The exhibition was inaugurated on Saturday by Professor Mario Buhagiar, Head of the
Department of History of Art at the University of Malta. This is Sagona's seventh personal exhibition to date.

The exhibition, named Nocturne comprises 20 recent semi-abstract acrylic canvases, all produced in 2010. They are
inspired by the beauty and magic of nocturnal light in various spots around the Maltese islands. They continue to
emphasise Sagona's fascination with light, an element which has featured in various exhibitions.

Important local exhibitions of Sagona's art have been held at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta and St James
Cavalier Centre for Creativity. His works have also been exhibited in Rome and very recently at the European Parliament
in Brussels.

Prof Buhagiar, who also wrote a short note for the exhibition brochure, said that Sagona "has earned good repute as an
artist destined to leave his mark on Maltese Art of the first decades of the 21st century".

Mark Sagona invests his subjects with abstract qualities so that a glowing synthesis between the real and the imaginary
is achieved. Typical of his approach, these paintings are full of poetic contrasts and captivating effects. Layers of
pigment and rich textures, patches of carefully orchestrated colour and bold contrasts create vibrant and striking
compositions that are arresting to the beholder.

The exhibition will be open for public viewing until Easter Sunday (April 4). This event is being made possible through
the kind assistance and support of Bank of Valletta, Silhouette The Light Shop (Victoria, Gozo) and VGB Art Gallery and
Supplies (Valletta).

Studied painting and drawing with Joseph Briffa (R.A.), Madeleine has a B.A. in Philosophy from the Faculty of Theology and was awarded a long term scholarship to study etching techniques at the Scuola International di Arte Grafica, il Bisonte in Florence Italy. Exhibition of sculptures by the late Anton Agius inaugurated

The Minister for Gozo, Giovanna Debono, has recently inaugurated an exhibition of sculptures by the late Anton Agius. His widow, Mrs. Louise Agius was also present for the inauguration.
